Career

Yeah, I'm a mom and I love my kids and home life, but I have always found joy in working too. I have done many different jobs; sales positions in ski shops, donut shops and home improvement stores, waitressing, and working the front desk in hotels. I've dabbled in home sales (which tends to get over-shadowed by my actual job). Most recently, I have worked as a nurse.
The great thing with nursing is that there are so many things you can do. You can work in a hospital or office or home. You can pick from multitudes of specialties and populations. You can further your education and become an NP, an educator, a manager or work in informatics. The possibilities are endless!
This section is a spot to post my musings and experiences as I dabble in all of them.

Changes on the Horizon

This first year working in New Zealand has been quite an experience.
It is hard for anyone moving to a new country to adapt to a new job while adapting to a new culture. Even though I am in an English speaking country, there are different forms of English. And slang changes depending on where you learned it. After being in one version of the slang for so long, you don't even realize what you took for granted until it's thrown in your face.
After adpating to my "Americanisms" and being corrected constantly, I've started to get back to a comfortable spot in my career. However, as with most new jobs, the shiny newness and happiness of the initial veneer has started to blur. So, as is common for many ex-pats when they move to another country, I am looking for another job.
When we first moved, my husband and I were looking for a change in lifestyle. We wanted to live and raise our kids in another culture. And, even though I didn't verbalize it to him then, I secretly wanted to shift my focus in work. I was sick of how stressed I was in my previous job and I wanted to take a step back and chill out a bit. But, instead of doing that, I jumped into the first job I was offered and threw myself right back into the rat race. Recently, events at work have made me finally say "ENOUGH!" and I've begun looking for another job.
Hopefully the next job helps me find a bit more work/life balance than I've been finding lately.
